Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

You can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan to assist with your course and living expenses while pursuing postgraduate studies.

The loan amounts are as follows:

  • Forcourses starting on or after August 1, 2023: Up to £28,673
  • Forcourses starting between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023: Up to £27,892

Loan Payment Structure:

Loan payments are distributed across all academic years of your course. For example, if you’re studying full-time over four years and apply for the maximum loan amount of

£28,673, your payments would be approximately £7,168 per academic year, divided into three installments at the beginning of each term.

Application Process:

You can apply for the Postgraduate Doctoral Loan at any point during your course, but applying after the first year might affect the amount you receive. The application deadline is no more than nine months after the first day of the final academic year of your course.

Disabled Students’ Allowance:

If you have a disability, including long-term health conditions or specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, you may be eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance, which does not require repayment.

Eligibility:

Eligibility for the Postgraduate Doctoral Loan is determined by various factors, including:

  • Nationalityand Residency
  • Age
  • PreviousStudy
  • Courseand University Eligibility

 Repayment:

Repayments commence either:

  • TheApril after completing or leaving your course

The April four years after the start of your course, for courses lasting longer than four years

  • Repayments are triggered only if your income exceeds a certain threshold,currently set at £21,000 annually, £1,750 monthly, or £404  Repayments are calculated at 6% of earnings above the threshold.

Previous Loans:

If you have previous loans from Student Finance England, repayment amounts are determined based on the terms of those loans. Repayment percentages vary depending on when your undergraduate course commenced.
